Willow Creek

Welcome to Willow Creek

Willow Creek is a small, unincorporated community in eastern Humboldt County, located where the Trinity and South Fork Trinity rivers meet along Highway 299. With a population of just under 2,000 residents, it’s known as the “Bigfoot Capital of the World” and serves as a gateway between the North Coast and California’s inland mountains.

Founded during the Gold Rush in the early 1850s, Willow Creek developed as a mining and supply center, with gold dredging playing a major role in the local economy well into the 20th century. Over time, mining gave way to logging and ranching, and eventually to a quieter, recreation-oriented lifestyle. The town’s Bigfoot legacy—rooted in regional folklore and nearby wilderness—has become a defining and playful part of its modern identity.

Today, Willow Creek has a compact town center with local shops, cafés, and small businesses, along with the Bigfoot Collection museum, which draws curious visitors year-round. Community events and river-based recreation shape daily life more than tourism, keeping the atmosphere grounded and local.

The rivers are central to the Willow Creek lifestyle, offering some of the best swimming, fishing, and rafting in the region. Surrounded by Six Rivers National Forest and Trinity Alps Wilderness, outdoor access is immediate and expansive. Housing ranges from in-town homes to rural properties tucked into surrounding hills. Willow Creek appeals to those seeking a remote, nature-driven lifestyle with a strong sense of place and a touch of Northern California legend.
