San Andreas

Welcome to San Andreas

San Andreas is a historic foothills town and the county seat of Calaveras County, located along Highway 49 in the heart of Gold Country. Like many of its neighboring towns, it has a small population of under 3,000 residents, yet serves as the region’s civic and administrative center while still retaining the feel of a small, heritage-rich community.

Founded in 1848 during the California Gold Rush, San Andreas quickly emerged as an important hub for miners and merchants. Gold was abundant in nearby creeks and quartz veins, and the town grew into a center for commerce, law, and governance—roles it continues to play today. Many original buildings remain, including stone structures and brick storefronts that speak to the town’s early prosperity and enduring importance.

Historic Main Street reflects this legacy, with local shops, restaurants, and public buildings set among preserved architecture. San Andreas is also closely tied to Mark Twain, who spent time in the area gathering material that later inspired The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. The nearby Calaveras County Museum offers deeper insight into the region’s mining, ranching, and cultural history.

While quieter than some neighboring towns, San Andreas benefits from its central location, providing easy access to Murphys, Angels Camp, and the Sierra recreation corridor along Highway 4. With its blend of history, government services, and community institutions, San Andreas feels grounded and purposeful—a foothills town where past and present remain closely intertwined.
