It does not get much better than Piedmont, California, the location of Highland Partners’ first office. Located in the Oakland Hills, Piedmont is bordered by the city of Oakland. Piedmont is just minutes from Berkeley and the Bay Bridge, but seems a world away from the hustle and bustle of the Bay Area. It is an enclave of beauty in the heart of the East Bay.
Many of the homes in Piedmont date back to the 1920s, when Piedmont was known as the “City of Millionaires.” Today, these gorgeous, turn-of-the-century mansions are as stately as ever. Piedmont’s historic homes from the early 20th Century, along with beautiful tree-lined streets, continue to impress visitors and residents over 100 years later. Many of these homes have panoramic views of the Bay. It is hard to believe that one can have breathtaking views with a proximity to San Francisco, yet still achieve the small-town feel that is Piedmont.
Piedmont is renowned for its luxurious homes, but it also has some of the best public schools in the nation. Piedmont High School is ranked in the top (gold) category according to U.S. News. The excellent schools are a major attraction for homeowners who want the best education for their children. Parent involvement in the schools is also a marked example of the strength and vitality of Piedmont.
The convenient and impressive shopping district within walking distance to all of Piedmont is the envy of any downtown. Its cafes and restaurants are mingled with banks and other essential businesses.
The beauty of Piedmont, its historical homes with panoramic views, combined with its proximity to the surrounding cities, nearly perfect weather, and its excellent school system, make it one of the most attractive cities in the Bay Area.
Piedmont is a small charter city in the Oakland Hills overlooking the Bay. Surrounded by the city of Oakland, the population is around 11,000, and the community is primarily residential and almost exclusively single-family.
The city is named after the Piedmont region in Italy, and translates to foothill. It was incorporated in 1907 and enjoyed major development in the 1920s and 30s, including the institution of the highly-regarded Piedmont Unified School District, which includes three elementary, one middle, and two high schools.
Though Piedmont provides most of its infrastructure, some services are shared with Oakland because of the geographic convenience. It is bordered to the northwest by Oakland’s Piedmont Avenue commercial district; the historic Grand Lake District (Lakeshore and Grand Avenue commercial districts) to the west; Rockridge to the northeast; Montclair to the east; and Crocker Highlands and Glenview to the southwest.
Piedmont’s Community Hall, Recreation Center, Aquatics Center, Center for the Arts, and several sports fields are very active and well-utilized. Five city parks and many landscaped paths and picnic areas dot the city’s compact 1.7 square mile area.
