Mokelumne Hill

Welcome to Mokelumne Hill

Mokelumne Hill is a small, unincorporated town in Calaveras County, perched along Highway 49 in the Sierra Nevada foothills. It’s one of the region’s most intact Gold Rush–era communities, offering a strong sense of history and a distinctly slower pace of life.

Founded in 1848, Mokelumne Hill was among the richest mining camps in California during the early Gold Rush, at one point supporting a population in the thousands. Gold was pulled not only from nearby streams but also from deep quartz veins, bringing early prosperity and architectural ambition. While mining declined, many original structures survived, and today the town’s historic district features 19th-century hotels, saloons, stone buildings, and wooden storefronts that feel largely untouched by time.

Main Street remains the heart of the community, home to art galleries, small shops, cafés, and the historic Hotel Léger, which has hosted travelers since the 1850s. Local events, live music, and community gatherings reinforce the town’s close-knit character and creative spirit.

Surrounded by rolling oak woodlands and scenic backroads, Mokelumne Hill appeals to artists, retirees, and those drawn to heritage-rich places. More residential than resort-oriented, it offers a foothills lifestyle defined by history, quiet beauty, and a deep connection to California’s early past.
