Welcome to Lafayette

Although Lafayette’s history can be traced back to more than 10,000 years ago when the Miwoks settled there, it wasn’t until 1968 that it was incorporated as a city “for the preservation and enhancement of the semi-rural character of the community,” according to its Mission Statement.

Lafayette is well known for its top-notch schools, small downtown, and high quality of life. Located just north of the Caldecott Tunnel, Lafayette has its own BART station and is a 25-minute ride to San Francisco. Its transportation roots extend back to 1860, when Lafayette was a pit stop on the Pony Express, at what is now the intersection of Moraga Road and Mt. Diablo Boulevard.

The Lafayette Reservoir is a hidden treasure under the auspices of the East Bay Municipal Utility District. The 925-acre site is open to the public with abundant hiking, fishing, boating and picnicking sites.

The prosperous lifestyle has generated an enriching arts and entertainment culture, and many regular community events display pride of place. Lovely shops and dining venues abound along Mt. Diablo Boulevard.
