Dorrington

Welcome to Dorrington

Dorrington is a small, unincorporated mountain community in eastern Calaveras County, located along Highway 4 at an elevation of about 4,500 feet. With a population of only a few hundred residents, it is one of the quieter Sierra foothill enclaves, known for its rustic charm, dense pine forests, and relaxed, unhurried pace of life.

Originally established in the mid-1800s as a stagecoach stop and supply point during the Gold Rush, Dorrington later became associated with logging and early mountain tourism. While mining activity in the immediate area was limited, the town played a supporting role in the broader regional economy, helping shape Calaveras County. Over time, it evolved into a seasonal mountain retreat, a role it continues to serve today.

Outdoor recreation defines much of life in and around Dorrington. The community sits near the North Fork of the Stanislaus River and is just a short drive from Calaveras Big Trees State Park, home to towering giant sequoias and year-round hiking trails. In winter, nearby Bear Valley Mountain Resort offers downhill skiing and snowboarding, while summer brings fishing, kayaking, mountain biking, and forest exploration.

Homes in Dorrington range from classic A-frame cabins to more modern mountain houses, many used as second homes or vacation rentals. With minimal commercial development and a strong sense of seclusion, Dorrington appeals to those seeking a true mountain escape—one rooted in nature, history, and Sierra quiet rather than convenience or crowds.
