Copperopolis

Welcome to Copperopolis

Copperopolis is a historic foothill town in western Calaveras County, set above the shores of Lake Tulloch along Highway 4. It blends Gold Rush roots with a growing reputation as a residential and recreational community, particularly appealing to those drawn to lake living and small-town scale.

Founded in the early 1860s, Copperopolis was once one of California’s most productive copper-mining centers, supplying copper for telegraph wire and Union artillery during the Civil War. At its peak, the town rivaled San Francisco in importance for a brief period. Fires, floods, and the eventual decline of mining reshaped the community, but its historic legacy remains visible today. The old Copperopolis Armory and remnants of mining-era infrastructure serve as reminders of its boomtown past.

Modern Copperopolis has evolved well beyond its mining origins. The Copper Valley community has introduced championship golf, trails, and newer residential developments, while the historic town area retains a quieter, rural feel. Lake Tulloch is a major lifestyle draw, offering boating, fishing, swimming, and waterfront relaxation throughout the warmer months.

Surrounded by rolling oak-studded hills and open ranchland, Copperopolis enjoys a sunnier, drier climate than higher-elevation Sierra towns. Its combination of history, outdoor recreation, and expanding amenities makes it an appealing option for full-time residents, retirees, and second-home owners seeking a foothills setting with room to breathe.
