Angels Camp

Welcome to Angels Camp

Angels Camp, often called the “City of Angels” or affectionately “Frogtown,” is a small historic community nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Calaveras County. Incorporated in 1912, it holds the distinction of being the only incorporated city in the county. Established as a mining camp in 1848, Angels Camp sprang up during the California Gold Rush and later became one of the richest quartz-mining districts in the state, producing significant amounts of gold in the late 1800s.

The city’s unique character is deeply tied to the famous short story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” by Mark Twain, which was inspired by a tale he heard at the Angels Hotel. That legacy lives on each May at the Calaveras County Fair & Frog Jumping Jubilee, one of the nation’s longest-running traditions and a highlight of community life. Sidewalk plaques downtown mark record frog jumps, adding a whimsical touch to the historic streets.

Historic Main Street features boutique shops, cafes, and cultural spots like the Angels Camp Museum & Carriage House, which showcases extensive Gold Rush-era artifacts and restored carriages. Nearby outdoor attractions, including New Melones Lake and championship golf at Greenhorn Creek Resort, offer recreational variety against a backdrop of rolling foothills.

With a proud small-town spirit, Angels Camp blends rich history with scenic charm and vibrant community events.
