My father, a proud graduate of Los Gatos High School, instilled in me a love for this community. My grandmother, his mother, played a pivotal role in supporting the San Jose State football team by running their boarding home. My maternal grandparents were among the early settlers who homesteaded property in San Simeon, close to the iconic Hearst Castle. In the 1930s, my aunts and uncles were employed by Mr. Hearst, holding various positions.
