About South San Francisco

South San Francisco is a bit of a misnomer, as this municipality is actually separated from San Francisco by Brisbane. Just as San Francisco is often called “The City,” South San Francisco is referred to as “South City” by locals....

South City is adjacent to San Francisco International Airport and, as such, is home to a wide variety of hotels and restaurants. It also proudly self-proclaims itself to be The Industrial City, so noted by the hillside landmark sign north of the city. Another notable landmark is the Wind Harp in South City’s industrial park area. It is an Aeolian harp designed to capture the wind to create musical tones.

Genentech, one of the world’s major biotech concerns, is headquartered here, providing employment to well over 7,000 people. Another sign dedicated to South City’s industry and technology is on East Grand Avenue, proclaiming it to be the “Birthplace of Biotechnology.”

South San Francisco is proud of its diversity, parks and recreation, and sense of local community, due in part to its location at the crossroads of major Bay Area metropolitan areas. Panoramic views of the Bay from the higher elevations along with the mild climate make South San Francisco an attractive place to live, work, and play.
