More than 125 languages are spoken in and around the many commercial districts, and Oakland is ranked as one of the most diverse cities in the U.S. You’ll see festivities such as the Chinatown Street Festival, Dias de los Muertos and frequent farmer’s markets celebrating that diversity. The First Friday Art Walk is a wonderful community experience that attracts thousands of people from around the Bay Area every month.

Oakland also has an emerging East Bay Vintners Alliance, all of which are on the waterfront. There’s even an East Bay Winery Bike Tour for the connoisseurs who wish to experience some tasting, enjoy the scenery and get in some cardio simultaneously. Also on the waterfront is Jack London Square, which is, of course, named for the famous author who once lived here.

Oakland has two lakes, 19 miles of coastline, thousand of acres of parkland, and miles of trails. If spectator sports are more to your taste, Oakland is one of the few cities that’s home to three major pro sports teams: the Raiders, Warriors and the A’s.

Many of the neighborhoods are like small villages within the greater urban expanse, all worth a look.
