Moraga is part of an 1835 land grant known as Rancho Laguna De Los Palos Colorados (Ranch of the Lake of the Redwoods). Tucked in among the rolling hills south of Lafayette, the 13,316-acre grant included parts of Orinda and Lafayette and the communities of Canyon, Redwood, Rheem and Moraga....
St. Mary’s College, one of the most notable institutions in the area, was established in Moraga thanks in part to a gift of 100 acres from The Moraga Company in 1927. The majority of today’s buildings and roadways, however, were constructed post-1960.
One of Contra Costa County’s most affluent towns, Moraga takes pride in its commitment to the enrichment of its community. Many annual special events take place through the Parks and Recreation Department including dances, teas and festivals. The Rheem Valley Shopping Center offers a variety of shopping and dining opportunities, and Orinda is less than five miles away.
