About Kensington

Located in the Berkeley Hills, Kensington is a small, unincorporated community in Contra Costa County. Unlike other unincorporated locales, Kensington has jurisdiction over its police department, park services, fire department and refuse collection. ...

Two of Kensington’s claims to fame are Tilden Park and Blake Gardens. Tilden Park is an enchanting area for children of all ages, and includes the Animal Farm, Botanic Gardens, Lake Anza, the iconic Carousel and Steam Trains and an abundance of hiking and biking opportunities. Blake Gardens is a 10-acre garden with a lovely array of floral offerings.

Historically, the land was the territory of a band of the Ohlones, and later the Republic of Mexico. In 1901, 10 acres were sold to George Shima, and in 1911 the land was surveyed as Kensington. Over the years, voters have resisted incorporation into the city of El Cerrito and still maintain an independent identity.

Consisting mostly of affluent residences, Kensington is home to several quaint shopping and dining venues with lovely views of the Bay from its lofty spot in the hills.
